“If there is meaning in life at all, then there must be meaning in suffering.” Victor Frankl
Logo Therapy is based on philosophy of Dr. Victor Frankl and is focused on helping people find meaning and purpose in your life. His development of this Logo Therapy was in response to modern times to people feeling emptiness and boredom with contemporary life along with the universal human experience of suffering. The group will read and discuss Frankl’s most famous work “Man’s Search for Meaning” and discuss its application in life for mental health and dealing with suffering. Frankl calls therapy healing, thus this aims to be a healing group. Short video’s about logo therapy can be found at bottom of this web-page.
Additionally, other philosophical reading/media/movie selections will be related to mental health, relationships, and the nature of being will be used to supplement participant’s insight and understanding of concepts explored in “Man’s Search for Meaning”. These selections will be chosen by the group leader from a diverse group of philosophical and spiritual writers including Chesterton, Plato, Dostoevsky, Sheen, and Goethe (every attempt will be to find free sources for all the supplemental material).
Who could benefit from the group?
Anyone who has experiences existentialist angst, feelings of emptiness/meaninglessness, and questions of “what ought I to do” or “how can I make a difference in the lives of other” could benefit from this group. Concepts developed in this group could also greatly benefit people’s whose vocation/job/career deal with people in suffering, including (but certainly not limited to) physicians, nurses, clergy, mental health professionals, and law enforcement. A healthy interest in learning and reading more about meaning, purpose and a philosophy of life is a must. There will be no diagnosis required or given in this group since insurance is not involved (see below), so if you are worried about retribution or a label impacting your life or career for being in “therapy”, no need.
Cost and Time Commitment
You will be asked to commit to coming to 8 weekly 90 minute group meetings. Insurance cannot be used for this group (probably insurance would not pay for this kind of group even if you tried, anyway). Since Ken (the group leader) also sees this group as a public service, you will be asked to contribute to the group whatever you earn in an hour per session or whatever you can contribute (which ever is larger). So if you make $10 an hour, you will be asked to pay $10 per session, if you make $300 an hour on average, you will be asked to pay that. We will work on the honor system for setting up payments, so please be honest. If you commit to the group and do not come, you will be charged the group fee. You must get a copy of “Man’s Search for Meaning” on your own.
“Happiness cannot be pursued, it must ensue.” Victor Frankl
